Where Do Terrunos Come From? Have you ever wondered?
Ever since we began to work with the coffee growers at El Ejido Malinal, 10 years ago, the web of influence has been expanding, as has the number of communities who are part of our quality program.
The Malinal® name and logo were initially envisioned to apply to the best coffees from El Ejido Malinal. As our program expanded to include neighboring communities, we began to export their best coffees as well, always giving each of these coffees a specific name to identify the source community. The finest coffees from El Malinal were called “San Juan”, after the extinct volcano on whose slopes they are grown. Later, the coffees from Jalcocotan were called “San Miguel”, named after the president of the cooperative at the time we began working with them. Then came “San Jorge” from Cofradia del Chocolon. In each case, the finest coffees from each community bore a distinctive name that exclusively linked the coffee to its source.
As the group of communities with whom we were working directly continued to grow, it became apparent that they would prefer to have their own names on the bags. Each community is proud of the coffee it produces and each community feels competitive about their coffees as well. Thus was launched Terruño Nayarita™, a new brand with a logo very similar to the Malinal® logo but designed to be inclusive of communities in the region, yet specific to each of them.
Terruño Nayarita™ is the “Homestead” or “Micro Estate” coffee from each community. Every bag of the community’s very finest coffee bears the name “Rerserva” and the name of the community along one side. Specific additional information about the coffee is included on our innovative bar code labels that are sewn into the bags.
