Cafés Sustentables de México, S.A. de C.V., our associate in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, is excited to announce the preliminary itinerary for its 2014 Eco-Tour. Join San Cristobal Coffee Importers founders, James Kosalos and Devorah Zeitlin, for an educational coffee adventure in neo-tropical Mexico. This visit to the lands of Grupo Terruño Nayarita is an excellent opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the issues of sustainability and the environmental impacts of shade coffee production and certification. You will see firsthand how Grupo Terruño Nayarita use the FincaLab® coffee quality management system to provide transparent accountability for its member societies (coops) while simultaneously assuring its customers a consistent quality coffee.
The six day, five night tour begins in sunny Puerto Vallarta with an orientation and welcome dinner. The next morning will be free for us to enjoy the beach and sights of Puerto Vallarta. We’ll leave Vallarta in the afternoon stopping to enjoy a seaside lunch on the way north up the Mexican coast to San Blas, a unique colonial port city full of historic ruins from the 18th century. There we’ll take a late afternoon boat tour through a bird sanctuary in a nearby mangrove forest. The following day will begin in San Blas with mid-day travel to coffee plantations near El Cuarenteño to pick coffee fruit and have lunch with coffee growers. We’ll also visit several diverse wet mills in the area to show how the various societies (coops) process their fruit to assure quality. In the late afternoon we’ll retire to Rancho La Noria for a relaxing evening punctuated with stories and home cooking.
The following morning we’ll depart Rancho La Noria for a cupping session at the offices of Cafes Sustentables de Mexico, Grupo Terruño Nayarita’s quality control agent in Tepic, Nayarit. There we’ll have an opportunity to see how the group’s coffee production is managed, blended and processed for export with barcodes and serial numbers on every bag. In the afternoon we’ll head for Cofradia de Chocolon for lunch with the members of CALDIO and a visit to their processing faculties and cafetales (coffee plantations). We’ll return to Tepic in the evening for a light supper.
The final day of tour activities will include a free morning in Tepic to enjoy its culture, museums and it’s exceptional market. We’ll depart mid-day for a dry mill tour and late lunch near Compostela and we’ll end up in Puerto Vallarta for supper.
Final departure is the following afternoon. Itinerary details are subject to change without notice.
