Cafés Sustentables de México, S.A. de C.V., our associate in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, is excited to announce the preliminary itinerary for its 2007 Eco-Tour. Join San Cristobal Coffee Importers founders, James Kosalos and Devorah Zeitlin, and Jaime Luna of Café Sustentables de México, for an educational coffee and birding adventure in tropical Mexico. This visit to the farms and surrounding area of the Ejido Malinal cooperative is an excellent opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the issues of sustainability, shade coffee production, certification criteria and environmental impacts on neotropical migratory birds and to converse with farmers about their lifestyles and livelihoods as coffee producers.
The six day, five night tour begins in sunny Puerto Vallarta with an orientation and welcome dinner. The next morning will be free for tourists to enjoy the beach and sights of Puerto Vallarta, with an afternoon departure, stopping to enjoy a seaside lunch, to San Blas, a unique colonial port city full of historic ruins from the 18th century, and a boat tour of a bird sanctuary. The following day will begin in San Blas, with mid-day travels to coffee plantations near Palapitas to meet coffee growers and to pick coffee. A wet mill tour will be given at La Yerba in the late afternoon, followed by dinner and an overnight stay in Tepic. The following morning, eco-tourists will depart for a cupping of the various types of coffee produced in the region followed by a trip to El Malinal, Cuarenteno, or Cofradia del Chocolon, where they will be given a mill tour and participate in a fiesta with the coffee producers before returning to Tepic for the night. The final day of tour activities will conclude with a free morning in Tepic for tourists to enjoy its culture and museums and its exceptional market with a mid-day departure for a dry mill tour and lunch near Compostela. A late afternoon trip with a stop at a traditional mountainside wet mill will end in Puerto Vallarta for dinner. Final departure is the following afternoon. Itinerary details are subject to change without notice.
